Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Bike—biking around Salem is very common and convenient, not to mention Oregonians love anything that is good for the environment.
  • Drive—when traveling a little farther from campus, the best way to travel is by car. Be aware that Salem is notorious for one-way streets, and Lancaster Drive and Commercial Street are bumper-to-bumper traffic.
  • Walk—center of downtown Salem is a two-minute walk from campus.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport The Hut Portland Airport Shuttle leaves from the Red Lion Hotel on Market Street and takes you right to the Portland airport. The ride is one hour and 15 minutes long, costs $35 (one way), and departs from Salem every hour and a half. For more information, visit www.hutshuttle.com or call (503) 364-4444.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Public transportation around Salem is convenient in terms of location and availability, but most Willamette students do not use it. At least half of the students at Willamette have cars, so if you don't bring a car to campus your first year, the odds are good that your roommate or neighbor will have one. Salem is not a sprawling metropolis, so the easiest ways to get around town are on foot or by car. But you definitely do not need a car, though. The downtown mall and movie theater are five minutes from campus if you walk briskly, while the Safeway is only three blocks down the road. Willamette’s central location makes it easy for students to find their way around.

Amtrak provides great, convenient transportation for some, but headaches and annoyance for others. The location of the train is both a blessing and a curse. It's super close, but the tracks run under the sky bridge that connects Main Campus to the Kaneko Commons, so the train becomes part of daily life for students living in Kaneko. This means waking up to the whistles and rumblings of passing trains at all hours of the morning. For some, the noise of the train is so bad that they end up moving to different dorms on campus. While it is definitely a plus for students traveling up and down the West Coast, the train is high on the list of student complaints.

No Transporation Needed

Campus is small enough that you can walk absolutely everywhere. Things off campus are almost always off campus or with in a short driving distance (by friend or taxi).

Just Your Feet

Salem has a good public transportation system. Taxi drivers can give you a ride late at night if you can't drive yourself home, and you charge it on your student card. Since pretty much everything is close by or on campus, you probably won't need anything more than your feet. There are college shuttles to the airport for holidays, so sign up early.
