Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics at Williams are for everyone—talented and amateur athletes, devoted fans and new recruits, sports lovers, and students who might not be that athletic at all. The outstanding professionalism of the coaches and athletic staff make the wonderful facilities on campus come alive with the spirit and effort of those who learn, teach, compete, play, or just have fun. The variety of sports classes and teams, both varsity and intramural, combined with the quality of their work, has made Williams stand out as a place where athletics thrive.

But, a question has to be asked: Do sports take over everything else on campus, pushing aside more intellectual pursuits? Although many would argue this point, one has to acknowledge that sports can only have a positive impact on people. At Williams, many have, in fact, chosen sports over other extracurricular opportunities, and it seems that no one has regretted such a choice.

Hard to Find Time

A lot of people are really enthusiastic about Williams sports, and the college is home to a good deal of really athletic people, but most everybody is way too busy to regularly attend games. The homecoming football is a pretty huge event and is a lot of fun, but otherwise people just can't find the time to watch more than a little bit of a friend's game. Athletic facilities are fantastic and easily accessible. The school has a PE requirement that can be slightly annoying, but you can fulfill it with pretty much any kind of college-run physical activity--African dance, yoga, squash, weight training, etc.

Enthusiasiam for Sports (Certain Ones...)

A lot of students at Williams are on sports teams. For a Division III school, Williams has a lot of student involvement in athletics. The teams are generally very good, ranking high in competitions. Fan support and school spirit vary according to the sport because there is a lot of support for more popular sports while not as much for the less popular ones. The athletic facilities at Williams are nice.
