Facts

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School

  • Dress for the ski slopes in winter because it can get pretty cold.
  • Williams College isn't as well known as big names like Ivies, but when you find someone who has heard of Williams, they know of its reputation and most of the time they’re the one that can get you a job.
  • Williamstown offers a unique opportunity to live in the middle of nature while learning and laughing and enjoying every second of it.

Tips to Succeed

  • Do not assume that Williams is boring if you are not a jock.
  • Don’t assume jocks are dimwitted.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  • Don’t take Williams for granted. It is a place where many good people work to make you a better person.
  • Go abroad junior year. Or some summer.
  • Go skiing to battle the cold.
  • Pick your classes carefully. Read about the professors who teach them, and ask students who took the classes before.
  • Take advantage of the excellent sports facilities, even if you are not into sports.
  • Take advantage of the opportunities to explore nature in new, interesting, and often free ways!
  • Talk to alumni. They, for sure, have faced the same issues as you, especially with finding jobs and internships.
  • Talk to your professors. Sometimes they face the same issues as you do.

Urban Legends

  • Have people had sex in the two-level monkey carrels in Sawyer Library? One witness told me he has seen lesbian sex. What remains a mystery is how the library workers, who are all eyes and ears, did not see it. Another Sawyer legend has it that students hid in the library and slept there after security locked up all the doors.
  • The health center is also known for giving out free condoms. But some will tell you, and others will confirm, that those condoms break. For those who spent most of their time hiding from the noisy air-conditioner in Sawyer library, this is just a legend.
  • The Williams Snack Bar staff are among the campus’s urban legends. When students see them wearing normal clothes, they usually react like they just saw Star Trek officers wearing jeans. The amount of work that these people do with a smile on their face rivals even the hours the geekiest math major spends in the library.

Traditions

  • Ivy Planting - At graduation, a member of the graduating class plants ivy next to a wall or a building.
  • Junior Advisors - JAs are like RAs, only awesome. When you’re a frosh at Williams, you are assigned an entry that consists of 20 fellow frosh and two JAs. These JAs are there to guide you, comfort you, and teach you the ways of Williams.)
  • Mountain Day - On one of the first three Fridays of October, the College president e-mails the entire student body while WOC members run through dorms banging pots and pans and Thompson Chapel bells ring. On this day all classes are canceled, and there are hikes—or a bus if you’re a wimp—to the top of Mount Greylock where adventurers are greeted with an a capella concert, a DJ, and cider.
  • The Mountains - The College alma mater, composed by Williams graduate Washington Gladden, puts the setting of Williams into words.
  • Watch Dropping - Also at graduation, a watch is dropped from the top of the college chapel. If the watch breaks, the graduating class will be lucky.
