College Prowler Take

It is very hard to get an A at Williams, so most are happy with a B+ or an A-. The same logic applies to what the school has to offer students. Williams is amazing for its incredible academic and athletic programs, and the inclusive atmosphere on campus promote and encourages personal growth. The lack of nightlife also helps the campus grow closer as people have little opportunity to go off campus and much more time to hang out with and talk to the people around them. Students acknowledge that some of the weaknesses of the school, such as location and the nature of nightlife in Williamstown, are not fixable. They also agree that Williams is working very hard on addressing other problematic issues. While the school changes with every class, every year, some positive and negative aspects of what it has to offer to the prospective student stand out. These are not only conditions that can’t be changed, like the weather, but also general features of Williams that many students criticize or praise.

No matter what the admissions office tries to tell you, the Williams campus is not particularly diverse. Many students of color feel very alienated here, and so do white students who don’t necessary fit the typical preppy profile. Many blame the lack of diversity on the school’s focus on athletics, but that isn't totally fair to the Williams sports teams, who do so much to promote the school’s spirit. It is thought that maybe Williams lacks in diversity because the College has already been associated as a typically “white and preppy” school. Besides admitting a fairly uniform and uninteresting student body, Williams has also placed them in a small and uninteresting town, where their social life is limited to keg parties with the same group of people every weekend and occasional dancing to the same three songs. Although many complain about this, others like those three songs and the beer, and they don’t require more options.

I would not trade Williams for any other college—I absolutely love it here! The fact that all my professors know me, and I recognize a large number of other students makes me so happy to go to this school. When you have a class of five people, you know that you are getting the individualized attention that a small liberal arts college boasts. I wouldn't choose any other school, even if I had to do it all over again.

I'm one of the few people who really don't like it here, but we're a fairly small portion of the campus—most people are happy here. To be honest, people on this campus will treat you differently if you stick out—I dress punk/goth, I'm an art major—which, for the most part, I think is a bit of a joke here if you're really motivated and technically driven because you won't find nearly the amount of work and dedication from your fellow art students as you would at a purely art-focused school—and I'm also straightedge, meaning I don't drink or do drugs. The party scene here is pretty lame and revolves around getting drunk and beer pong on weekends, so if you're looking for more than that and are not willing to find other things to do, you'll be left out.

I respect Williams tremendously for providing me with an environment where I could learn and not worry about anything else. Also, it was very important to me to continue playing sports, and Williams gave me this opportunity. I think that Williams is a school where you must work very hard to achieve your goals and to be satisfied with your results, but I think people choose to pressure themselves to work hard, because that is who they are. For example, I know nobody forced me into waking up at 6 a.m. for practice and then rushing to a 9 a.m. class. I felt that the people around me respected my ambitions and my schedule, and no one tried to change me. I found many people I can relate to.

In four years of school, you’ll change a little bit. I see that I have changed other people, too, and that I have been able to stick to what matters the most to me. Professors have been great in this respect; they let you share, and they don’t judge you for standing out with a different view on popular issues. Clearly, my grades were not impacted by my desire to say what I think, nor did I feel alienated, although I was always a minority.
