umass amherst has a much higher ranked comp sci program which im sure you are already aware of. There is a much better social life there too. But the student body at wpi is probably smarter in general. I would chose amherst especially since it is honors.
depends on what you want, WPI professors have years of experience, it's a closer community and is ranked 19th smartest school, Umass amherst is bigger and possibly better known around the country, but on the east coast and internationally WPI is very well known.

Most people who decide to come to WPI absolutely love the school. The small, welcoming atmosphere is wonderful. Students tend to like the campus itself, too; it's beautiful, especially in the spring. Occasionally, people dislike the workload at the school, but many people would return to WPI if they had to do it all over again.
The community at WPI is the best feature of the school; it's what keeps people there, even though the work is tough. Joining a club or a sports team is a great way to make WPI feel like "home." Even though students can be 2,500 miles from home, they can feel like they have family on campus, through involvement in sports and clubs.
