Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For dorm users, the computer network is fast, and setting it up with your system is relatively painless. Occasionally, there will be some down time due to technical problems, but overall, everyone in the dorms has a reliable Internet connection. However, don’t expect to go on a downloading rampage! The University has bandwidth restrictions in place on file sharing programs such as Kazaa and Morpheus. With everyone having a high-speed connection in their dorm room, it is not uncommon to see a group of Xavier students huddled around an X-Box 360, battling it out against their friends across campus in games like “Halo” and “Madden ‘06.” There are enough computer labs that getting to a computer is never a problem, but most students bring their own computers or laptops. The Gallagher Student Center lends out laptops for students to use on an hourly basis at no charge, but the laptops are notoriously low on batteries, sometimes making them more of a headache than they’re worth.

Xavier has a good ratio of computers to students, making it
easy on those who choose not to bring their own computer to campus. The network is adequate enough to serve the needs of its users, usually without too many problems such as viruses. There has been an effort on the University’s part to make the laptop system in the Gallagher Center more conducive to everyday use, but the students could use more than just one lab operating 24 hours. Other than that, most Musketeers are happily plugged in at Xavier.

Wireless Network Is Bad

The internet connection at Xavier University is not good. It often stops working or has to be restarted. Having Wi-fi everywhere on campus is nice and having free printing is great. The computers could also be updated.

In addition to the MyXU portal page for all current students, Xavier has recently developed the Road to Xavier portal page specifically for accepted high school students. This site allows incoming students to meet other Xavier students, both incoming and current, and provides many other services to prepare new students for the Xavier experience.
