Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Xavier’s campus may technically be considered “diverse” when you look at the figures the school provides, but make no mistake: this is definitely middle America. While 48 foreign countries are represented in the student body, if you walk around campus, you’ll find that probably accounts for close to 48 students. While kids from all across the country come to Xavier, the fact is that most of them have similar white, middle- to upper-class backgrounds. Also, the conservative political atmosphere at Xavier and surrounding Cincinnati doesn’t invite much diversity either. If it’s diversity you’re looking for, Xavier may not be the ideal setting.

Xavier does its best to educate its students on diversity, even without actually experiencing much of it on a day-to-day basis. The wealth of minority clubs, such as the Black Student Association (BSA) and the speakers the University brings in from all over the world, help the middle-class white kids from the tri-state area to understand what life is like outside of the bubble that surrounds Xavier. Despite these efforts, Xavier is still not a very diverse place.

Its a Private Catholic University...

For being a expensive, Catholic university in the Midwest. Xavier does great job. Xavier students are not only taught but truly live out the Jesuit/Catholic mission of living for others, and all people are welcomed here.

Facts

Gay Pride

Xavier is generally a polite and tolerant place. Groups like the Xavier Alliance ensure that GLBT students are treated equally and have a voice in the campus community.

Political Activity

Cincinnati is one of the most conservative cities in America. However, Xavier’s campus is often accused of being a liberal hotbed. The fact of the matter is that many of the actual students at Xavier come from conservative backgrounds, but the most loudly voiced opinions are considered to be progressively liberal. Both sides of the issues, however, are voiced in student organizations such as the College Republicans and College Democrats.

Economic Status

Xavier is a pricey place to go to school, so there is naturally going to be a major influx of upper-middle-class students. However, there are people from all types of backgrounds due to the large amount of financial aid Xavier gives.

Most Common Religions

Catholicism is the primary religion, due to the fact that XU is a Catholic Jesuit school. However, there are groups and organizations for just about every religion you could think of, where students can join to explore their faith.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are a plethora of minority-focused clubs at Xavier which can be seen in full force on campus. Minority clubs such as the Black Student Association often sponsor and promote many of the activities on campus.
