Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus safety is a high priority for the administration at Xavier, and it shows. Campus police vehicles are on frequent patrol 24 hours a day, and everywhere on campus is well lit, so one can take a midnight stroll without being accosted (unless you’re into that sort of thing). The University has in place emergency call-boxes throughout the campus, so that if there ever was any trouble, the campus police are able to respond fairly quickly. As long as you are on Xavier University property, you feel relatively safe. While neighboring streets are not quite as pristine, there seems to be a heavily-enforced bubble that keeps those who live and work at Xavier safe.

The campus police do everything within their means to make sure that everyone on campus can live, work, study, and play in a safe environment. Unfortunately, with crime problems in the surrounding communities, especially Norwood, there is only so much the University can do. On campus is one of the safest places in the county you can be, but unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the streets outside of Xavier, where many students live in apartments and houses.

Stay on Campus

I have never once felt in danger on campus. Cincinnati may be a city with a bad reputation, but if you're on campus there seems to be virtually no danger.

Be Smart

Xavier can be a very safe place... if you don't do anything dumb. The school has been putting 20+ blue emergency phones around campus. But, there are some dangerous areas off campus. As long as you don't leave at night by yourself, you'll be fine. Plus there is a bus that provides transportation around the outside of X which is also nice.

Safety and Security at Xavier University

Considering Xavier is such a small campus, I have always felt pretty safe while traveling alone at night while on campus. During the day, I am not necessarily thinking too much about my safety. However, I have found myself alone on campus walking to my car after a long night of studying or writing a paper. Times like these, I am thankful that we have a small campus; on my walk to my car, the chances of seeing a campus police car are generally pretty high. Also, when the newer buildings such as the CLC and Smith were added, there were new emergency set-ups added with buttons to push that link directly to campus police. These made me feel even safer than before. Although it is hard to say that I am 100% safe, especially considering the area just a few blocks away from campus, I can say that I generally feel safe while on Xavier's campus.

Did You Know? Campus police sit in their cars with the lights off at night in the parking lots to keep watch. There were problems of break-ins in the past, but the police force has been extra vigilant as of late. You can read about all their busts every week in the campus newspaper, the Newswire, which has a section devoted to humorous and interesting police notes.
