College Prowler Take

Cincinnati is a very interesting city to live in, especially if you’re not originally from here. The atmosphere of “the Nati,” as it’s called by many of its locals, is culturally diverse, but very conservative. There are different pockets of culture scattered throughout the area, with strong German influences in almost all of the architecture. The University of Cincinnati is the only other major college in the area, and it serves as Xavier’s rival in just about everything. Some of the must-see attractions include the Great American Ballpark, home of the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Zoo, and the Newport Aquarium, which is just across the river in Kentucky. While there is a multitude of places to explore in the Cincinnati area, there are a couple spots wandering students should probably avoid. Over-the-Rhine, a struggling neighborhood that suffers from drug infestation, crime, and negligent landlords is a place you don’t want to be after dark.

Cincinnati is a unique place to live and go to school. Many students who come from other areas are often amazed at how different the city can be from their home towns, for better or worse. However, Cincinnati is not all that it could be, as far as safety downtown, cultural events, and things to do in general. While you won’t go out of your mind from boredom, don’t confuse “the Nati” with Chicago, New York, or Los Angeles.

Cincinnati has the characteristics...

Cincinnati has the characteristics common of any middle U.S. city. There are professional sports teams to watch, movies to go to, places to hang out, and so on. Just across the bridge is the Newport Aquarium, an interesting place, though not cheap. The only other big university in the city is the University of Cincinnati, but the Universities of Dayton and Miami of Ohio are only an hour away. These are places where students frequently visit.

The atmosphere in this town sucks...

The atmosphere in this town sucks pretty bad. There isn’t really a whole lot to do, unless you want to spend some serious cash. There are other universities in the area, which makes the scene a little better simply due to the availability of many, many parties. I’d say that it would be wise to stay away from certain parts of the downtown area, as they’re extremely dangerous. The Playhouse in Eden Park, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and a football game in the Pit at Elder High School are certainly things every person should try at least once in his or her life.

At Xavier, there is a clear...

At Xavier, there is a clear division between people in the surrounding towns. I would say there is some sense of resentment towards the students and the institution of Xavier University by some citizens of Norwood, but for the most part, it is a great place to live. The University of Cincinnati is literally 15 minutes away. That makes rivalry games huge around here. Miami of Ohio is also considerably close to Xavier. As with any urban setting, there are definitely spots of Cincinnati you may want to avoid or be careful around. For the most part, however, Cincinnati is a great place to live and visit.

The campus is set in a suburban environment. The atmosphere is no more than a couple of local bars, which act as college hangouts. University of Cincinnati is located about 15 minutes away. UC is closer to the heart of the city. Some parts of the neighborhood can be rough, so be cautious. However, this never keeps students from walking around at night.

I have visited friends who go to Miami of Ohio and UC. I tend to stay on campus, but I have been to Reds and Bengals games, as well as a couple of concerts. Check out Kings Island, it’s awesome.
