Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Be adventurous, ride the Metro
  • Ride with a friend
  • Walk or bike
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A cab ride to the airport costs about $25.
  • Bumming a ride is your best bet. The airport shuttle does not make regular trips to Xavier, so if you absolutely can't find a ride, the Metro would be your best choice. A cab service is also an option. For some major breaks, such as spring break and Christmas break, Xavier offers free shuttle rides to the airport, but those must be reserved in advance.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The University provides a shuttle service that will take you anywhere on campus and a few blocks off campus, but, beyond that, there is not much in the way of public transportation. A plan for building a light-rail system in the Cincinnati area, which would have included a stop within walking distance of Xavier’s campus, was shot down by the residents of Hamilton county, so no plans for improvement seem imminent. The Cincinnati buses are hardly used by students, due to the location of the bus stops and the general inconsistency of the city’s mass-transit system. If you’re looking to go somewhere off campus, your best bets are walking or finding a friend with a car.

Transportation can be a big problem in Cincinnati if you don’t have a car or a friend who doesn’t mind driving. The general opinion of the students is that the Metro is slow and unreliable. Also, some students show concern over taking the Metro because of the sketchy people that sometimes frequent the buses. For getting in and around campus, however, the shuttle service serves its purpose well. There are a couple places within walking or biking distance, but if you’re looking to see something other than Norwood Plaza, you’re going to need a car. The lack of a reliable public transportation system for students makes exploring the city inconvenient and unappealing for those without a car.

Adequate Transportation on Camput

I didn't have a car during my freshman year so I walked everywhere. I moved off campus as a sophomore and used my bicycle and walked when the weather was nice. I drove when the weather was bad. I would say that the transportation is average.

Pretty Good Transportation Options

There is a shuttle that will take people to various locations for free, according to a schedule. Students with cars are also extremely willing to give others rides to places, or take them along.

Not Great, but Not Bad

There are shuttles on weekends to local malls and shopping areas. There's also a nightly shuttle to nearby streets where students live. I think there's a shuttle on Friday nights downtown. Beyond that, you need to make friends with someone with a car. It becomes decently important.

Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority

This agency provides reliable bus services in and around the city. Sometimes, though, the public transportation system often proves challenging to XU students: fares and schedules fluctuate daily, and standing out in the cold weather is not at all pleasant. If you plan to take buses, contact SORTA for current route schedules, maps, and rates. The Metro also operates a downtown and special events shuttle.
