College Prowler Take

As long as illegal things aren’t done unabashedly and publicly, the campus police are completely willing to look the other way. Police do not usually raid houses unless there are noise complaints or fighting. Underage drinking is ignored by the administration, who even allows alcohol at public social events within the college. Yale treats its students as adults who are capable of taking care of themselves and making wise decisions.

Essentially, the campus police follow the spirit of the law, not the letter of the law; they care only about the students’ safety. In fact, the campus police officers often protect students from getting caught by the city police. For instance, if a student is walking down the street with an open beer can (this is illegal in New Haven), they will warn them. Students have been known to smoke weed right in the courtyard of their college. Most students applaud this relaxed approach and feel comfortable and safe, despite the leniency.

It’s not very strict. The Yale Police are there to protect you from the New Haven Police. Drinking is pretty big, although if you don’t want to, there is really no pressure.

You can get away with a lot here, and I think students tend to forget that. Yale Police will certainly shut down rowdy parties, but it’s more unusual for them to start arresting kids for drinking or getting warrants to search for drugs. I think there’s some degree of understanding that college students will break these laws no matter what.Still, the police will get involved in the event that these activities (usually parties) are disturbing other students.

Campus police are not very strict, depending where you are. Bars and clubs check IDs, but many are lax on letting in underage kids as long as they have plastic that says they are legal.

For the regular drunken college bash, security is not strict at all. They choose their battles wisely.

I hadn’t really tried much of anything before I came, and I found that that to be great. I never felt like I had to do anything, but if I wanted to, I was never scared of the cops. I know friends at other schools who say that whenever they drink, it always has to be hidden.
