College Prowler Take

Students agree that although it is convenient to have a personal computer, it is by no means mandatory. Everywhere you look, there is a computer kiosk or lab, and every residential college has its own computer lab. Very rarely is it impossible to find a computer to work on or check your e-mail on (except during the chaos of midterms or finals). As a plus, labs provide a quiet place—away from roommates and your television—where work can actually be done.

If you want to bring a computer, students agree that laptops are the best choice. Their mobility makes them easy to take to the library, to class, or outdoors on a nice day. All dorm rooms are fitted with high-speed Ethernet connections, so it is as easy as buying a cord to connect to the network. Also, every residential college has a team of computer assistants available to fix your computer practically anytime of day at no cost. This is an invaluable resource that comes in handy at the beginning of the year when you have to install Yale software or if you tragically lose a paper the night before it is due.

There are lots of computer labs available, but they do get very crowded around midterm and finals crunch-time. Bring your own, and I totally recommend laptops, if that’s an option. They’re so convenient—you can write your papers anywhere. I don’t really like to write papers in libraries, so I often go to a classroom at night and write there—all the rooms even have Internet access.

I love the computer clusters—it’s so easy to pop in and print stuff or check e-mail. I rarely have to wait for a computer. Still, I would definitely bring your own computer—at least for me, it’s much easier to write papers in my own bedroom than in a public place.

I love having a laptop. Having your own computer gives you the freedom to work wherever you feel comfortable, and bringing your laptop to the library is very helpful. The computer clusters are useful, but typically crowded. I use them to print sometimes, but it’s easier to link to a roommate’s printer and share.

I think the computer labs here are adequate; I’ve never had a problem getting a computer when I needed one. But, there’s a bit of an e-mail culture here, so I’ve found it very convenient to have my own computer in my room.

I’d recommend bringing your own computer, as the computer clusters can get a little crowded around midterms and finals. They’re very nice computer clusters, though.
