Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Yale has an extremely tolerant policy on alcohol. Students are only disciplined for alcohol if they become involved with the New Haven (rather than the Yale) police or hospital. Instead of encouraging students to avoid the health center to avoid punishment, the University encourages students to seek medical help without fear of repercusion. These policies make drinking a very popular activity on campus since alcohol is widely available. If, however, alcohol leads to other problems like sexual harassment or vandalism, Yale will address the offences.

However, alcohol is not an imperative part of the Yale experienc. Students can have a great time (there are a lot of parties!) without ever touching alcohol. It's a personal choice for each student. There is so much to do on campus (dance parties, theater, music, comedy shows, etc.) that alcohol simply isn't necessary to have a fabulous night.

Like nearly every school, there is a drug scene amongst certain cliques or groups of students. However, it's easily avoidable and not an integral part of campus life. Alcohol is much more popular. If you don’t interact with people who use drugs, you might never even encounter drugs on campus. Students do not have to negotiate “peer pressure." Yalies value freedom of judgment and leave others' decisions up to them.

Do What You Want

Regulation is at a bare minimum, and both alcohol and weed are definitely very visible and widely used. Not a lot of people regularly smoke weed; most of the time, with a few exceptions, it's just a weekend thing or once in a while. I'd say it's about 50/50 smokers and non-smokers. As for other drugs, I haven't encountered anyone using them myself, though I've heard of a few people doing coke.

Drug Lack of Safety

There is not enough policy enforcement. There has been at least one alcohol or drug-related death reported in the last 2 years. But you don't need to worry about peer pressure, so this is not something you necessarily need to worry about.

Very Lax Administration

Alcohol and drug policy enforcement is very lax. When you arrive as freshmen, the administrators will essentially tell you that they don't expect to be able to stop people from drinking, and won't punish it, but encourage you to get in contact with them if you feel you or someone else is at risk of serious health or academic problems. It doesn't seem like it would be difficult to get alcohol-- in my residential college (and most others, I think), there are groups of students who stock up and spam everyone's email accounts with information on how to get some from them during "alcohol-free" events like Spring Fling, dances, or residential college events. Pre-gaming is a big part of the culture (not just games or dances-- some people drink before big tests, too.) There are always events going on without alcohol, though, so you can avoid it. I haven't run across too many people who use drugs recreationally, but I have known several who use drugs to focus, study, de-stress, etc. Again, the administration is pretty lax with enforcing rules on drugs, even when there are health risks to other students.
