Advice
- Finding a summer job, internship, or career (gasp!) can be an incredibly overwhelming experience, especially when you have no idea what you want to or can do. This is where Undergraduate Career Services steps in. While they can’t do the deciding for you, they offer a variety of resources from personal guidance appointments to access to job databases to career fairs and on-campus interview programs. There is no reason to struggle alone—they are there to help. Although as competitive students we are eager to use every opportunity to add padding to our résumé, it is important to take some time off to travel or just relax. Many students choose to do a painful unpaid internship their summer after freshman year, but the benefits are outweighed by a summer of suffering. As freshmen, it is very difficult to get a worthwhile internship (most good ones are reserved for sophomores or higher), so they usually end up standing by a photocopier all summer without being paid or learning. This early experience is unexceptional in the long run. Most are better off resting or traveling. However, once it is time to decide your real future post-graduation, it is important to start at the beginning of senior year when most early applications for jobs and graduate schools are accepted. Also, it is important to pursue all possible opportunities during that year. For example, if you are pretty sure you want to go to law school, it is still a good idea to apply for a few jobs. It is amazing how many people change their minds during this time; the closer you are to the reality of a decision, the less or more it might seem appealing.
Write for Us! College Prowler is actively seeking talented students to be "Contributing Authors," and assist with updating
