College Prowler Take
With the exception of a few frat parties, the Greek scene at Yale is almost nonexistent. For the few who are involved, it is mostly seen as another social activity, a place where you can hang out and find some support. The fraternity scene is more prominent than the sororities (there are 8 fraternities, but only 3 sororities) mostly because they serve as clubs for Yale’s varsity athletes.
While the Greek scene is very small, most Yalies see the a cappella groups as an equivalent replacement. Like most fraternity and sorority pledges, the singing groups’ potential members rush and go through an initiation. These groups are together often for rehearsals and tours so they become a kind of family—much like the brothers and sisters of a sorority.

Sororities are almost nonexistent; you hardly know anyone in one. As for frats, they are bigger if you want them to be. There are maybe four houses that consistently throw parties, but it tends to be the same crowd at these parties. If it’s your thing, it’s really cool; if not, there is plenty more to do around here. |

I couldn’t tell you what frats we have to save my life. And I don’t know a single girl in a sorority. |

Greek life doesn’t determine the social scene even a little bit. I couldn’t even name all of the ‘active’ sororities and fraternities on campus. Only a few events that are frat- sponsored get any publicity on campus. |

Frats are bigger than sororities, but neither is very big. They definitely don’t dominate the social scene, but they are there for those who want them. We also have lots of a cappella groups, which become little frats and sororities of their own, but it’s not really the same thing. |
