College Prowler Take
Students agree that Yale is a pretty attractive school. While many students do not have the time to put into primping (makeup, clothes selection, or even shaving), the rumor that beauty is inversely proportional to intelligence is proven wrong at Yale. Not only are many guys and girls hot, they are talented, smart, funny, and interesting, as well. Unfortunately, Yale students are also busy—often too busy to have relationships. Instead, most of them partake in random hookups that occur as drunken blurs. To many, hooking up is just another kind of stress relief. But for those who are looking for love, there is hope. Some students do find real love; some have even been known to get married!

Not a Bad Pool, but Who Has Time to Date?
A-
Yalies do a pretty good job of shedding the ugly geek stereotype. Okay, so if your ideal is the dyed-blond hair, lots of makeup, fake eyelashes kind of girl, you'll have slimmer pickings, and ditto for girls into big bearded bruiser kind of guys. But if your type isn't quite so MTV Spring Break, you'll find Yale has a pretty good dating/hook-up pool: people here tend to be smart, interesting, fun, and pretty good-looking. If anything, the girls here can be a little intimidating; how *does* that girl in your section manage to make such brilliant comments about Chaucer, sing in an a cappella group, play IM sports, and look great while doing all three? I can't comment in an informed way on the guys, except to warn straight girls that there are a lot of gay men here—the saying is 1 in 4, maybe more—so your dating pool is going to be smaller. All that said, be warned that pretty much everyone at Yale seems to fall into three categories: not doing much of anything, hooking up casually on weekends, or in a long-term super-committed relationship. There isn't much casual dating here, probably because people are so involved both with their academic and extracurricular lives. Every so often, there'll be an op-ed in the Yale Daily News or the Yale Herald from a sad single guy or girl bemoaning this, but nothing will change.

Not Bad
B+
The looks are kind of like the GPAs; inflated, with a tight standard deviation.

It’s very hard to come up with a ‘typical’ Yale guy or girl, but I suppose that’s part of the fun of being here. We are probably not significantly hotter or less hot than similar schools. A lot of Yale girls are prettier than they think they are, and are fun and interesting to boot. Yale guys are harder to characterize, but I’d say there’s a fair mix of attractive (but sometimes not as smart) jocks, self-conscious and average frat boys, and urbane, sensitive, sophisticated, and often gay other guys. I mean, we’re no Florida State. But, there are some surprisingly beautiful people here. |

Ha ha! Not only are they hot, they are smart! I am partial to the people at Yale because the impression that I got was that they were much more down to earth and relaxed than people I’ve been introduced to before. |

Social Scene
The residential college system at Yale makes it easy to make connections between students. By transforming Yale into smaller social units, the colleges make interactions less overwhelming and intimidating, and by sponsoring social activities (study breaks, dances, and the like), they provide opportunities to make new friends. Also, campus organizations provide a place to meet people of similar interests.
Hookups or Relationships?
Because students at Yale are so focused on their academics and activities, hookups are more convenient and more popular than relationships. However, some people do develop these random encounters into serious relationships.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
At Yale, students study hard and party hard, so most people meet either in academic settings or at bars, clubs, and parties. Classes and clubs provide a setting in which you can slowly get to know someone and become friends first. As a bonus, you know off the bat that you have something in common such as a love for Russian literature or similar political beliefs. While academic connections often flourish into serious relationships, most students meet each other at bars, clubs, and parties. In drunken hazes, students dance, kiss, and sometimes go home with each other, but these hookups rarely develop further and often result in awkward sightings in the future.
Dress Code
There is no official style at Yale. Instead, everybody does their own thing, from punk to trendy to preppy. The only time there is a more uniform look is during finals, when most people walk around in their pajamas or sweats.
