Social Scene
Yalies are truly interesting people. The social scene at Yale is incredibly varied and fulfilling. The residential college system makes it easy to make connections between students. By transforming Yale into smaller social units, the colleges make interactions less overwhelming and intimidating. They also sponsor social activities (dances, study breaks, movie nights, and the like) that provide great opportunities to make new friends. Also, campus organizations provide a place to meet people with similar interests, from politics to music.
Hookups or Relationships?
It really depends on what you want. If you want to hook up, chances are you can find someone if you go to the right places. However, there are plenty of Yalies looking for the love and support that relationships bring. It really comes down to your own personal choices and what you're looking for.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
At Yale, students study hard and party hard, so most people meet either in academic settings or at bars, clubs, and parties. Classes and clubs provide a setting in which you can slowly get to know someone and become friends first. As a bonus, you know off the bat that you have something in common such as a love for Russian literature or similar political beliefs. While academic connections often flourish into serious relationships, most students meet each other at bars, clubs, and parties. In drunken hazes, students dance, kiss, and sometimes go home with each other, but these hookups rarely develop further and often result in awkward sightings in the future.
Dress Code
There is no all-prevalent style at Yale. Instead, everybody does their own thing, from hipster to punk to blah to preppy. One might suggest that the only time there is a uniform look is during finals, when most people walk around in their pajamas or sweats. In general, however, most students at Yale look fairly put together. Students enjoy shopping at Urban Outfitters, J. Crew, American Apparel, Laila Rowe, and Salvo in New Haven. And don't forget that Yale sweatshirt and scarf!
