College Prowler Take
While students admit that off-campus housing is available and close to campus, most choose to stay on campus for all four years. Because students must live on campus until their junior year, by the time they have the opportunity to move, they have made connections within their college and enjoy the social scene it creates. The decision to move off campus means a separation from the Yale community. You don’t have Ethernet, and you do have more responsibility.
That being said, those who choose to move off campus are usually very happy with their decision. Yale basically owns all the property around campus including apartments, so you deal directly with them. This makes things easier and more organized (especially if you are on financial aid). Decisions are made by lottery. In the end, everyone who applies gets an apartment, usually one of their top three choices. It is a personal decision to live off campus or on. The benefits of off-campus living include no shedding the pricey meal plan, getting more privacy, and recieving a break from the academic environment.

Some are really, really close. Off-campus housing pretty much makes up the blocks around the official Yale campus, but most kids do live on campus. |

A lot of my friends think it is worth it to live off campus, and I love their places—most live in the Chapel Street area or on High Street. It’s not that expensive, and you can get huge apartments, but I wanted to be on campus because I like the college atmosphere and the camaraderie of living with my classmates. Plus, it’s nice to pad down to brunch in pajamas and slippers on the weekends and to have laundry right downstairs. Most of my best friends are also staying in my dorm, so it really has a summer camp vibe! We have our whole lives to be grown-up and live in apartments—why not take advantage of this perfect little bubble tailored exactly to our needs—we’ll never have the chance again. |

Housing off campus is abundant but...
Housing off campus is abundant but pricey. The closer to Yale and New Haven, the more expensive or potentially dangerous is can be at night. It’s better if you can get a group together so you can share a place. I believe that lots of places offer student pricing or have places reserved. The more people you have, the better things are in terms of out-of-pocket expenses. |
