College Prowler Take

Although New Haven is an urban setting with its share of crime, students agree that they generally feel safe on campus and in town. Because of the area, it is easy to end up in a bad part of town simply by walking three blocks in the wrong direction. But, you quickly learn what and where these places are and when to avoid them. Yale has its own police force, separate from the New Haven Police Department, and its presence is felt. There are also many services for student safety, such as police escorts to walk you home after late-night study sessions.

Although New Haven can be dangerous, it is usually so only when a person is unwise and walks home alone late at night. Most students agree that the safety services and security are a great resource and advise incoming students to make use of them. As long as you use common sense, there is rarely a reason to feel in danger.

It’s fine. New Haven in general isn’t the safest city, but campus is a very nice area, and I’ve never had any sort of problem with security. You just can’t go too far away from campus alone at night, which you wouldn’t do anyway in any city. And there are lots of precautions the school takes for security. Don’t worry about it, and certainly don’t base your decision on this.

I haven’t had any problems personally, and I leave my door unlocked and open most of the time.

There are countless blue phones all around campus, from which you can dial a friend or security. There are panic buttons on each phone, and you can also get in touch with security to come pick you up. I feel safe on campus, but I usually try to walk with someone wherever I go late at night. All you need is common sense on any urban campus. The minibus will pick you up from certain locations, but I walk everywhere.

I think it’s great—when I was alone in the dorms over spring break and was worried about an intruder, the security team was over in seconds and stayed for a while, checking everything over. And then they called repeatedly over the next day or so to ensure that I was still doing okay. I was definitely a fan of that.

Despite what you may have heard about New Haven, it is nice, and there are blue phones all over the campus. There is also a big security staff that works with the New Haven Police.
