Though YSU frequently has frat parties, most students choose to frequent local bars and clubs rather than sit around at frat houses. Youngstown nightlife is very much alive, particularly in the downtown and Federal Street areas. Downtown is a quick, five-minute walk from the center of campus. Though it pays to remain alert and aware of surroundings, the downtown is generally very safe thanks to the vigilant Youngstown Police Department. For students looking for some excitement, the local hot spots feature drinking specials and novel attractions. Many establishments bring in live music and touring bands, and several showcase artwork from local artists.
You don't necessarily have to be a party animal to find something to do after darkness falls. Students who aren't into clubbing can head to the local suburbs of Boardman, Austintown, Niles, Liberty, and Girard for shopping, community theaters, movies, and seasonal festivals. If you'd rather stay close to campus, check out the Penguin Pre-Parties at Peaberry's (Kilcawley Center). They take place every Thursday evening and frequently feature live music or karaoke. The Rec Center is another place frequented by students, offering a variety of fitness classes and intramural sports. During the fall, especially, participating in a match of ultimate Frisbee (watching or playing) can be a highly entertaining nighttime experience under the lights of Stambaugh Stadium.
